Just an update

Just a quick one. Uni has started for the 3rd semester and my last assignment has been handed in so that means its revision time!

I didn’t do much yesterday as I was being lazy for one and also I got a new hard drive for the Home Server racking it up to 3Tb so now I can properly fully backup my PC to it with the extra space.

On another note I thought it worth a mention the blog was put live 2 years ago yesterday. Can’t say I have been using it solidly for 2 years but its birthday was yesterday 2 years ago. Actually that reminds me, I’m 20 a month today… Where is the teen?

Money Saving

The start of term starts to tomorrow (Thank you Google Calender reminders) and the start of my money saving plan! Over the past couple of terms I have had a rough idea on budgeting my money but at the end of the term is seems its all gone down the pan and I have next to nothing left!

So with the new year I have decided to budget my money, my debit card will stay at home and I’ll only have £55 to spend a week! This should leave me at the end not so much positive but a lot less negative.

To kick start this plan I have reduced my mobile phone bill, because of the stupid rules I can only reduce it once and at one step at a time (Oh but I can upgrade how ever many times I want, Grrr, Stupid Orange) but I have now saving a little bit and as they say, A little bit goes a long way..

To help motivate me I have decided that left overs of each week will be set aside and will hopefully build up so I can get some new hard drives for the media server and put Windows Home Server back on it!

Windows Home Server

During the 9 months I forgot about this blog I invested in an operating system called Windows Home Server by Microsoft. I won’t go in to the features of the WHS but the main reason I got it was I found that I couldn’t fit all my data on one hard drive. WHS has a solution to this by pooling hard drives so basically you can have 3 hard drives appear as one.

Here is the spec of my server

Processor – AMD Athlon x2 4400+ 2.10Ghz
RAM -Crucial 512MB x 4
Main HDD – Maxtor DiamondMax 200GB IDE
Storage HDD – Samsung SpinPoint T 500GB SATA-II 16MB x 4
Other HDD – Hitachi Deskstar 80GB IDE

Its total storage is just over 2TB and is currently going to serve at my house in Stafford.

Over time I’m going to blog about my WHS, general goings on etc.

How To: Share Mailbox on Exchange 2003

This is just a quick post on process of sharing a mailbox within exchange. Its mainly for me just in case I forget later but if it helps just one person it will be worth the posting.

This is done on Small Business Server 2003 with Microsoft Exchange 2003, although it may be applied to Exchange 2007 but I’m not sure I haven’t yet touched it.

You may want to share a mailbox for a number of reasons but the main reason for me is to allow multiple people to use a mailbox for a certain role. For example you may have an e-mail address along the lines of support@example.com. You may have multiple people replying to support e-mails. By sharing a mailbox users can mark e-mails read, flag or even delete e-mails.

Here is how its done!

Stage 1: Allow users access
1: Create a user account for the e-mail address. I am going to use the example support.
2: Set up the accounts e-mail (pop3 mailbox etc)
3: Log on to the account (Support)
4: Open Outlook, Click; Tools > Options > Delegates > Add
5: Add/Find users you would like to grant permissions to
6: Add the user by clicking “Add–>>;”  Tip: you may add multiple users
7: Click OK
8: Clicking the Inbox drop-down menu; select editor (See Fig1)
9: Click OK x2, and return to Outlook

Stage 2: Apply permissions to the inbox.
10: Right Click “Mailbox – “useraccount displayname”" and select Properties
11: Add the users from before
12: Grant each user “Publishing Editor” permissions
13: Click OK
14: Log off

Stage 3: Add the mailbox
15: Log on to the user account you granted access to (Eg user1)
16: Open Outlook
17: Click Tools > E-mail Accounts
18: Click Next > Change
19: Click More Settings > Advanced
20: Click Add
21: Enter the name of the mailbox (Eg Support)
22: Click Ok
23: A message box will appear, Click Ok
24: Click Next > Finish
25: Upon returning to the main Outlook screen the mailbox should appear down the left hand side
26: If it doesn’t restart Outlook
27: Repeat stage 3 for each user

Hope this helps?
